The Dukedom of Parma and Piacenza lasted for over 300 years, but castles and fortresses of our country have more ancient origins. They are perfectly kept and form one of the most beautiful castles' circuit in Italy.
Near the Appennines the most important castles are the Bardi Fortress (second in Europe for dimensions), the Compiano Castle (built the year 1000) and the Corniglio Castle.
Near the hills you can find the Felino Castle, site of Museo del Salame, the Montechiarugolo Castle, the Sala Baganza Fortress, and the Torrechiara Castle, built in the XV century.
In the Bassa parmense zone there are the Colorno's royal palace, sumptuous home of the Farnese family, Fontanellato's Rocca Sanvitale, with its frescos by Parimigianino, San Secondo's Rocca dei Rossi and Soragna's Rocca Meli Lupi, built in 1385 and still inhabitated by the Meli Lupi family.
